Quvenzhané Wallis was born in Houma, Louisiana, to truck driver Venjie Wallis, Sr. and teacher Qulyndreia (Jackson) Wallis. Qunyquekya is her sister, and Venjie, Jr. and Vejon are her brothers. Her name, "Quven", is a combination of her parents' first names' initial syllables. Even though the minimum age to be considered was six, Wallis auditioned at the age of five for her very first acting role, the lead in Beasts of the Southern Wild. In the end, she defeated 4,000 other candidates to play the part of Hushpuppy, the resilient young survivor and child prodigy who lives in the backcountry filth of Louisiana with her dying father.
